Why am I a creative person? Why do I have these abilities? Why do I feel so empty when I am not using them? Why shouldn’t I throw it all out and pursue something else? The answer to these variations of “Why” just felt so heavy…
THE WHY BEHIND THE WHO
We grow physically, spiritually, personally relationally, we are ever changing and life is too. However, if we don’t know who we are, we won’t know where we are going. “Why”, that’s the part of us that isn’t that easy to answer and very easy to ignore or deny.
As I have ventured the waters of stepping out to pursue a creative career, I realized I needed to know my “Why” before I could confidently do anything. If not I would keep getting paralyzed by fear, horribly comparing myself to others, constantly feeling under-qualified and feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude of whether or not I am making the right decisions.
This was when I realized I needed to apply the wisdom of the Scriptures and allow them to “transform my heart and mind to discern God’s good, perfect and acceptable will for my life.” (Romans 12.2) I wrestle with these questions every day and that is a part of the journey. I have realized that these moments of contemplating and doubt offer me an invitation to seek the answers.
By faith I am growing to trust that each detour and uninvited interruption is actually what it looks like to:
Release control, rest (stop the chase and take care of my body)
Be known fully (unraveling the greater purpose I was created for. I am not what I do creatively, it’s the fruit of who I am)
Assured that I am being guided with Sovereign plans which produces the glorious fruit of contentment and peace.
You are living for so much more than what you do…what’s the greater purpose behind it all?
You are gifted uniquely, your talent is not small, grow slow, appreciate your craft, and keep learning but of everything don’t just invest in your creative talents without tending to your soul. Sit with these big questions at times, wrestle with them, and give some thought, I am finding that a better understanding of my why is helping me contribute so much more to my creatives, the lives of those around me, and prayerfully our world. Keep seeking YOUR WHY.
